EASTER DOGSHOW

At 11.00am Easter Saturday the Mallacoota Arts Council’s own Fairy Dogmother and the mother of all dogs, Dogma, presented the “Dog Fancy Dress Show”. A considerable crowd gathered around the show ring next to the community market, to witness this amusing event, which was a great success thanks to the many entries of all ages, shapes and sizes – both people and dogs. Everyone looked like they had loads of fun and the spectators loved it.
Luckily the event did not turn into a blood sport, as the dogs were very well behaved despite the indignity of their get-ups.
There were many nominations and candidates for the Dog Most Tolerant of being Dressed Up.

Some notable entries were Bob Thorneycroft wearing a large dogman mask made by Catherine Larkins, which resulted in him winning the category Dog Most Like its Owner, and the two black staffies dressed as John Travolta and Olivia Newton-John, complete with leather jackets and dark glasses.
There were many wonderful costumes made and it was great to see so many kids get into the spirit of the occasion.
Thanks to the sponsors, most entries received a prize for their efforts.

Thanks go to our sponsors –

NATIONAL YOUTH WEEK IN MALLACOOTA

What do you get when you have 50 spray cans of paint, 55 pieces of chalk, 150 cans of soft drink, 120 local sausages and burgers, 10 loaves of bread and a few salads, 500 watts of music, several local artists, some very keen skateboard riders, a BIG Lions club BBQ, and a bunch of Young people ?? - Trouble? No!!

SK8 Park Art is what you get !!
On Sunday April 15th at the Mallacoota SK8 Park, the Young people celebrated their artistic talents and board-riding prowess as part of National Youthweek 2007.

The Mallacoota Arts Council applied and received funding from the Department of Victorian communities to host the event in collaboration with the Mallacoota District Health & Support service, the Mallacoota Community association, the Halls and Recreation committee, the local P-12 College, and the Mallacoota BoardRiders club.

Tim Fraser of the BoardRiders club, and Steve Baxter the local Youth worker, worked together with Giselle Reagan, a local artist to co-ordinate the event, and Nigel Allison, the arts and design teacher at the P-12 College supervised design entries from students, that were included in the overall design features painted on to the central ‘fun box’ at the SK8 Park on the day.

There were also a number of large canvas panels erected so everybody could spray their favorite colours on the huge ‘YouthWeek’ sign and learn some spray techniques with ‘Reb’, a former Mallacoota artist employed to share his talents on the day.

There were also many ‘Chalk Art’ pictures produced by young and older alike on the SK8 park surfaces, which were very colourful, and very creative.

An enormous range of BBQ goodies, drinks and salads were supplied for all participants, parents and onlookers, and the music played loud and long throughout the day.

A generous array of prizes were donated, including skateboards from Core Skate, Surf, and Kite shop, and Finns Skate shop in Pambula, as well as bags, stickers, art equipment, videos, and CDs, from several local businesses such as the Mallacoota Surf Shack, Coota Surf Shop, and the Mallacoota Butchers and Bakery.

The SK8 Park Art was followed by an “expression session” on the park, for which the winners, judged by expert boardriders, were awarded prizes too.

All had a ‘wicked’ time and the SK8 Park has now been claimed by the “New Breed” of Young people, and their ‘mark’ has been permanently established.
